      <image:title>Hand-Sewn Tunic - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>For the blue striped cotton tunic I let the yardage dictate the design versus my measurements. I had 1 yard and played around with folding it so that the straight of grain went down the body and the grain line going around the body. I decided to have the selvedge run around the hemline and have the grain go across the body. This meant the body would be full and the hem would hit at hip level. I decided to cut off 4” (10 cm) of width to use for ties if I wanted them later on. To minimize waist I embraced the drop shoulder and the fullness of the body. The shoulder is on the fold with two sides seams. The cut dimensions of the body when laid flat are 32” (80 cm) wide by 23” (57.5 cm) long. I was inspired by the neckline of shifts for the neckline. The neck line was cut down 5.5” (13.75 cm) on the front neck and .5” (1.25 cm) for the back neck. The opening was cut at 8.5” (21.25 cm). The arm openings are 9” (22.5 cm) deep.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewn Tunic - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>This white linen tunic was designed with the width of the fabric in mind. The fabric from selvedge to selvedge is 56” wide (140 cm). The tunic is cut with one side seam and a fold where a side seam would be. The shoulders are seamed together over the shoulder. Taking into consideration the widest part of my body is 47” (117.5 cm) this gave me 11” (27.5 cm) of ease and meant the finished width would be 27.5” (82.5 cm) when laid flat. Thinking of the finished width was important because that dictated how far off the shoulder the fabric would hit or how much of a drop sleeve I would have. Since my shoulders from outer shoulder to outer shoulder measure 17” (42.5 cm) that gave about a 5 inch (12.5 cm) sleeve. I only had 1 yard of the material and realized I could incorporate the selvedges into the design to maximize the width. Even though I had 36” (90cm) in length I cut the length of the body at 30” (76” cm) because that was how long I wanted it to be. The width of the body is 27.5” (82.5 cm). The arm openings are 8.5” (21.5 cm) deep.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewn Tunic - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>This pink and white striped top was designed based on the amount of fabric I had left over from a project. It turned out I had enough for it to be a closer fitting top. This, in turn, dictated the length of the top. Because it is closely fitted the width of the tunic would not go over my hips and therefore ended up ending at my upper hip. The width of the body when laid flat is 22” (55cm) and the length is 18.5” (46.25 cm). I chose a v-neck because I think that is flattering for my face. The neck dimension is 8.5” (21.25 cm) wide with the front neck opening is cut 6” (15 cm) deep and the back neck opening is cut 1.5” (3.75 cm) deep. I free-hand drew the rounded-v-neck. The shoulder is on the fold with two sides seams.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I am using a lace designed for insertion. The two selvedges are finished and are straight. I pinned the lace on outside of the cotton organdy, making sure the right side of lace is facing up. Notice how the lace is follow the grain line of the fabric. The edges of the lace are parallel to the edges of the grain line of the textile. I pinned the lace to the fabric perpendicular to the lace using very sharp dressmakers pins.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>I used a felling stitch to sew down the lace. Stitching with Gutermann silk thread I stitched the loops of the edge of the lace’s selvedge to the fabric about 8-10 stitches to the inch. I pinned, then sewed, then I positioned my next piece of lace across the section I was working.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>To “true” up the top of your fabric: lay the textile out on a large surface with the messy edge parallel to the edge. The frayed edge is parallel with the “weft” or “cross-grain” of your textile. The straight edge of fabric that has a finished edge is called the “selvedge.” The selvedge runs parallel with what is called the “straight-of-grain.”</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d0a94565e831600018233b7/97dc9d3c-6ae7-4fc3-8b09-c7a5a70f604b/tempImagewo1HFK.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Carefully study the top of your fabric. Notice how it is not straight, it is curvy or almost like a stair-step. This is because weft yarns have pulled out of the weave structure in different sections. Notice in the image above how there is more fabric towards the top and less fabric towards where I began cutting. This is because more weft yarns have been pulled out closure to where I started cutting. You want to begin cutting and pulling a thread on the side of the selvedge that the most weft yarns have been removed. When you cut and remove a weft thread you do not want to hit a section that the weft threads have already been removed. To begin: Use your dressmakers shears to cut perpendicular into the selvedge. Try to cut between two yarns along the weft.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d0a94565e831600018233b7/d7b4d3b5-4b81-45de-88f8-a051acfdc2e0/tempImage8gT1Cf.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Pull the cut section apart. A weft thread should pull out of the weave structure. This weft thread is now your best friend. This is the thread you will remove from across the weft. If a weft thread does not easily dislodge from the fabric, use a pin to gently pull it out of the weave structure.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d0a94565e831600018233b7/aff029a5-3d07-4f25-99f4-7bf36fb98365/tempImagefPTPMN.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Hold the base of the weft thread that is still in the textile with your non-dominant hand and gently pull the loose weft thread with your dominant hand. The fabric will likely start to pucker as seen in the image above. Use your non-dominant hand to push that puckering across the weft. It is likely at some point the weft thread you are removing is going to break. Great! Pull that out. Note: if the weft is being ornery grab a pin and use the tip of the pin to carefully dip the tip under the yarn and pull it up and away from you.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Notice above how the weft yarn has been removed from the fabric. It creates a small voided space.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d0a94565e831600018233b7/7fce8d38-8b86-419d-8dfe-5b6d6ec67081/tempImagekda1Hz.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Grab your dressmakers shears and cut along this voided space until you get to the point where the yarn is still in the weft. When you get to this point you will cut very carefully in-between the weft thread you are removing and yarn next to it.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d0a94565e831600018233b7/9c37867d-6fd2-4ff7-8139-5e32aae11a85/tempImageSHdLsp.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Then coax your weft thread out of the weave structure with a pin. Pull it (or keep using the pin to pull it up and out) again like you did before. Repeat this process of pulling the yarn out and cutting along the voided space until you get across the entire width of the fabric.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Once the top of the fabric is “true” you can cut out your garment. I do this by measuring along the warp and across the weft to create different rectangular or square shapes depending on the garment. This image shows me pulling a thread from the warp.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is a pocket I cut out using the pulling thread technique. I measured up and over to remove the warp and weft threads. Then I cut out this rectangular shape.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewing Tips - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>I pulled threads before I hemmed this section. You can see how the folded hem is straight along the grain line. When you pull a thread you can trust the cut edge is straight so you can precisely fold a small hem and trust the width of the fold.</image:caption>

However the techniques really apply to anyone interested in hand sewing. Well researched, easy to follow written instructions. However drawn diagrams only show one step. <image:caption>I used these vintage needles. For a lot of garment construction I like to use a sharps because they are a little longer but for this project I needed a slightly shorter needle. A between/quilters needle was the perfect length. I ended up using 3 needles. It was important with the lace and fine fabric the needles were always very sharp. I used a size 8-10 in this pack of antique needles.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewn History - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Once the lace was inserted I hemmed all the way around the body of the cap at about 1/8”/ 4mm. I did not hem the curve because the center back seam had more lace to be stitched to it and the crown section was going to be whip-gathered in place.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d0a94565e831600018233b7/59fc8fe6-b14f-4f49-b136-d15343eec3ec/tempImageUQnpLP.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Hand-Sewn History - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>I hemmed the circle. While I am very happy with how the lace insertion came out, I am the most proud of this tiny little circle. Hemming on the bias is extremely difficult and I was very pleased with this result. I used a tiny running stitch and you can see how I pulled the running stitch a little bit around the curves to ease in the bias. I used this technique because I have seen small running stitches used like this to control the bias on antique caps.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:caption>Detail of the circle set into the crown. I whip-gathering the curve at the the back to gather it to the right dimension of the circle and then whipped the circle to the gathers. The line of lace you see extending down from the circle is a piece of lace I attached at the center back to close off the crown. I chose to put this lace at the center back because I have seen this done on antique caps.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hand-Sewn History - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>This is the finished cap with all the borders and trim added. You can see the amount of fabric that was gathered across the front of the cap. What I do not have pictures of are the yards and yards of rolled hems I did for the borders. The front of the cap has a border that was made with 90” / 225 cm piece of fabric that was folded over on itself to make a double ruffle. So that is 180” / 450 cm of rolled hems on that border alone. The folded section was then whip-gathered to the front of the cap.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Aislinn’s work gown. This is made out of a striped linen and lined with a checked linen. Linen is safe choice when working with fire. It will smolder before it burns. These fabrics would have been very cheap in the 18th-century. Making a gown like this affordable for a blacksmith. From left to right: one bodice back with its lining, one front bodice piece, one shoulder strap with lining, a sleeve cut on the cross grain.</image:caption>
